If you prefer to read about what makes a blog post a great one, there are a couple of tips outlined below and in the video to help.
Actually, this blog post by itself is a good blueprint of how to write effective and link-worthy blog posts and content pieces.
Creating a good headline
Creating a good headline is easier than it initially seems.
The best headlines are the ones that are most natural. For example, in clicking on this article, you knew that it was going to give you some tips for creating a great blog post.
Another great way to figure out what you want to make your headline is to ask somebody what they would write in Google when looking for your topic of choice. You could even ask yourself. Be natural!
And use numbers. Statistically, people are more likely to click on articles if there is a number attached to the blog post.
What are permalinks?
Permalinks seem like a small portion in the creation of a post. (They are) But there is so much to them when it comes to search engine optimization.
The permalink is what the link looks like when it is displayed. I recommend making a permalink that ranks well with Google’s search algorithms. This article has the permalink “create-great-blog-post” appended to the end. This is effective because it gets to the point without needless words and will play a part when someone like yourself goes to Google and searches for an article about “creating a great blog post”.
Permalink editing on the WordPress back-end can be edited by administrators in the dashboard via Settings > Permalinks.
Content creation best practices
This portion is not about exactly what content to put in your post. That will differ based on your own personal writing style and the topic of the article.
There are a couple of quick tips in the creation of content to keep people reading and keep your article from aging poorly.
As for length of article, a good average length is about 600-800 words, depending on what the topic of the article is. Too long, and you risk boring the readers with fluff; too short, and you have just made Google angry.
On the subject of spicing up the article, adding video content or images to divert attention from the flurry of paragraphs is always good.
Also, keep those blocks of texts small and break them up with line spaces. I don’t know about you, but when I see a massive wall text, my finger itches for the “back” key.
The power of smart links
I know this article is low on the overall number of links, but it is important to note that a lot of them link to other parts of this very website.
As a content creator, your best ammunition are your other articles. This provides not individual value but value in the overall website. Also, a person looking at articles may come across other pieces of your website (subscribe pages, products, or email lists?)
Using SEO with WordPress
There is a wonderful, free tool for search engine optimization on WordPress. It is called WordPress SEO by Yoast, and it was used in the creation of this article. A walkthrough for how to use this plugin is found directly in the above video.
It is always good to create Google-ready article meta-data, both for technical and organic purposes. When perusing any search engine, I use the meta description underneath the title of the post to determine whether a click is necessary. Make your description shine.
Practice these tips and be organic and you will have yourself a successful blog article.
Update the article consistently as well to ensure that your article is always up to date and relevant.
