PressThis PressThat: WooCommerce vs WP e-Commerce

The third episode of our weekly video series is here and on YouTube.

This time we look at what it means to sell online, as we take a look at eCommerce plugins for WordPress that make it easy to be an online salesman.  WooCommerce and WP e-Commerce are the two plugins that go head-to-head this week.

We talk about the importance of having a simple interface and the amount of options available for selling, shipping, and customization, among many other things.

    Hey Guys!

This is great I just wanted to mention that WPEC already comes with UPS and USPS included in the free version.

Really enjoyed this video you had great points about both plugins.

      Very cool and duly noted!

      Thanks for the clarification Michelle!

Hi, i’m brazillian and i wan to setup my webstore with woocommerce. Can you tell me about woocommerce performance? How much you can sell and manage your sales?

Another question is about themes. Woocommerce only accecpt especifc themes? Or any theme can be used?

    Thank you

So far we haven’t hit any performance issues or limits on sales. Managing is really easy with their dashboard and reporting.

Technically, you can use any theme, but there are specific themes that are styled for WooCommerce that you can use.

Send us an e-mail at discoverslocumstudio.com if you want to learn how we can set this up for free for you.

      Thanks for stopping by!

I really appreciate this video! Getting ready to move a large site over from osCommerce to WP.  Having tested both solutions in this video my observation is that wooCommerce is easier to setup and use.  It has more plug-ins; however, and this is where it gets difficult, wooCommerce pricing on their plugins starts adding up quick.  I need to add table rate shipping. That is going to cost me $49-$100US for that add-on.  Then I need quantity discounts.  It is a plug-in that costs ANOTHER $99US.  Then I need the Authorize.net plugin.  Another $49!  Total $250!

In comparison, WP e-commerce has table rate and quantity discount built in.  Therefore, the only plugin I have to buy is their Gold Cart plugin at $49US.  Total $49.

Now the question is, how much development time will I spend tweaking either to really get it to do what I want?  With wooCommerce easy-to-use interface I was able to start adding products almost immediately when I download one of their ready to go, free, wooCommerce themes.  Whereas with WP e-Commerce, I would need to begin with a base theme and then tweak it to get the right look and feel.

In this instance for me, though it cost more money, wooCommerce wins! This is mostly due to the speed at which I can get this project out the door.  I’ll just pass the cost on to the client and there ya go.

It is just something to consider when doing a comparison of features, cost, and development time.

    My two cents.

Hi, I am choosing between WooCommerce and Jigoshop as the plugin to use for my lingerie website. Essentially I want the site to:
     - collect customer/member data
     - manage orders
     - manage inventory
     - sends email invoices & receipts (may need an email app like Aweber/Mailchimp)
     - mobile optimized
     - work with a 3rd-party payment gateway
     - work with a 3rd-party shipping solution
     - create promos

Any thoughts about which would be better?

** Enjoyed the video, by the way. Very insightful. Thank you!

    Hey guys,

Very helpful video – thank you!  I have a question and I’m hoping you might be able to provide some insight.

I’m designing a site for a client who sells produce at market value, which makes direct checkout tricky.  Is there an e-commerce plugin that will allow customers to create an order without a payment gateway?  Or is there a way to account for products with a changing price value?

Like your site. Most of the discussion I have found online comparing Woocommerce and wpec only talk about the store elements, with no mention of integrating store function into a blog.  Can Woocommerce be used as a storefront on a blog without changing the WP theme? I.e., does Woocommerce work independently from Woostore?? Thanks!

    Hi,
For selling tickets which plugin will do the best.
I know there are 2 options ( wpecommerce + tikipress ) or ( woocommerce + wootickets ) but didnt tried none.Anyone has experience with these is there any free alternatives?

    • http://mattreport.com Matt Medeiros

      Hank,

Thanks for the question! I don’t know of a free version – aside from using PayPal – but that isn’t fun :)

An alternative “easy” approach might be using GravityFroms plugin for the store versus using a heavy plugin like a WooCommerce.

      Hope that helps!

Keep in mind that Wootickets also requires that The Events Calendar 2.0 also be installed. I have used the Woocommerce/Events Calendar/Wootickets and have found it to be more than suitable for my needs and would expect it to address the needs of most other people as well. Also Wootickets costs about $50. So while it’snot expensive, it’s not free either.

You ‘guys’ gotta remember that a world exists outside of the USA.
